Reviews:
I studied viola with Courtney Grant for a little over a year. I had played viola for about seven years before beginning with Courtney, however I had never made as much progress with any teacher as I did with Courtney. Not only did she genuinely care about my improvement, but she also inspired me to take viola seriously and pushed me towards goals I’d never expected to meet. Courtney's instruction went far beyond the basics, but she gave me a more thorough understanding of the fundamentals of viola than I had ever had. She emphasized precise technique and carefully selected appropriate pieces that addressed my particular needs. She also gave me listening exercises that helped me understand and appreciate the viola repertoire. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Courtney is a wonderful person with whom I very much enjoyed spending time.

Courtney has been my 8-year old daughter’s violin teacher for a little over a year and within this time Anna, who is by nature reserved and has a tendency to hold back, has blossomed to become a confident and communicative musician. This new found confidence has allowed Anna to be freer to express herself through and thereby enjoy her music. Courtney is a superbly talented teacher who is able to adapt her style and approach to her student (as opposed to the student having to adapt to the approach of the teacher, which would be a disaster). She is always upbeat and finds the good in her student’s music. At the same time she always finds things that can be improved on and therefore continues to challenge her student to become better in technique and musicality. But even the challenges are offered in an upbeat and fun environment. When things get particularly challenging, Courtney breaks down the process to focus on one manageable step at a time (bringing to mind Bob’s baby steps in ‘What About Bob’). Lessons have a refreshing natural flow to them where work on technique or musicality slows down or speeds up depending on the needs of the student. Theory and music history are sprinkled in as icing on an already yummy cake. Anna always comes away from lessons with a sense of accomplishment, ready to seize a full week of practice and looking forward to the next time she sees Courtney. Thanks Courtney for this wonderful experience, a gift that will last a lifetime!

I can't give enough praise for Courtney Grant as a violin/viola instructor. Not only does she have years of experience instructing traditional (young) and non-traditional (older, which is me) students, but she is also an experienced professional player which adds an important dimension to her teaching. She always maintains a high degree of focus with every lesson and gives measured and valuable feedback without being overly critical. In other words, she keeps you honest, but also keeps it fun. She has certainly given me the skills and confidence to overcome every new lesson assignment, technique, or obstacle that comes with learning a new instrument. I have the utmost trust in her as an instructor and recommend her highly to aspiring violin students.
